Cyber Attacks – What They Are and How to Protect Against Them

13 January 2026

As the world continues to advance and becomes increasingly digital, the risk of exposure to cyber threats continues to grow. Alongside nation-states conducting espionage and cyber warfare, conventional criminals now use sophisticated software developed by large organizations, governments, or organized hacker groups.

The objective of these actors is to extort knowledge, data, and financial assets, or to cause significant damage to competitors and adversaries.

Types of Cyber Attacks – A Multistage Threat

Many people refer to cyber breaches as a single category, but in practice, cyber attacks take many forms and are often highly complex. Modern information security measures are relatively effective, meaning it is not always easy to penetrate a targeted organization’s systems. Sophisticated cyber attacks often unfold over multiple phases to reach a defined objective.

In the initial phase, attackers may carry out phishing or spear-phishing attacks designed to obtain access credentials such as usernames and passwords. In the second phase, attackers attempt privilege escalation. Since most users have limited system permissions, the goal at this stage is to expand access to introduce malware that requires elevated privileges and is capable of causing substantial damage.

What Is a DDoS Cyber Attack?

A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack occurs when attackers take control of unsuspecting computers to create a botnet, a network of compromised devices. Once activated, these devices flood the targeted system with massive traffic to disrupt or disable its operations.

Today, this is not limited to computers. Other network-connected devices, such as printers, web cameras, and smart televisions, are also targeted. These devices form what is known as a zombie network that enables a distributed denial of service attack.

Another common category is ransomware. In such attacks, access to the organization’s systems is blocked and a ransom is demanded, typically payable in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, in exchange for restoring access. While many attacks are state-sponsored, the use of cyber warfare has expanded to criminal groups and organizations engaged in business rivalry.

Examples of Major Cyber Attacks in Recent Years

  • The 2016 US Election Interference – Russian operatives used fake online personas, troll networks, and data breaches (including the Democratic National Committee) to undermine public trust and leak sensitive communications.
  • The Cyber Attack on Dyn – In October 2016, a massive DDoS attack targeted Dyn, a major DNS provider. By using smart devices as part of the attack, hackers disrupted access to global sites like Amazon, Netflix, and Twitter.
  • Global Ransomware Attacks – Between 2015 and 2018, Iranian actors targeted US municipalities and hospitals. The city of Atlanta paid a 6 million dollar ransom, but still suffered losses estimated at 30 million dollars after the payment failed to restore the encrypted files.

Cyber Insurance for Businesses – Your Financial Defense Layer

One of the key trends in the insurance industry is the development of a financial defense layer against cyber threats. Companies use this coverage to protect against:

  • Exposure of customer and supplier data.
  • Violations of privacy and identity theft.
  • Direct damage to information systems and data loss.
  • Ransomware extortion and financial recovery.
  • Third-party legal claims and indirect operational harm.

Beyond direct damage remediation, these incidents often require crisis management teams and public relations firms to restore corporate reputation and public trust.

Madanes offers comprehensive cyber insurance designed to protect businesses against a wide range of digital exposures. Our solutions are tailored to each client according to their specific operational needs and risk profile.
